Extra Credit Assignment

This Is It: Michael Jackson Movie 
Extra Credit Instructions:

- Go see the movie in movie theaters
- Type a 2 page, single spaced, 5 paragraph essay (introduction, 3 developed paragraphs, conclusion) answering the following questions about the film:

1. What made Michael Jackson so successful? Give specific examples from the film.
2. Write about your own reaction to and/or impression of the film, Michael Jackson himself, and the film in general.

Be completing this extra credit project your student will be able to "fill in" a lot of the missing scores on his/her grade. There is no due date... I will accept it starting now and until the end of the quarter. If your student has any questions regarding the content of this paper or needs some more explaining then feel free to have them come talk to me one-on-one before or after school; I am here to help and only want their success!

Why am I proposing such a project? I am so passionate about this film! It shows an inside look at all of the collaboration, hard work, talent, commitment, and responsibility it takes to produce such an amazing show! These are all the things I have been trying to teach theatre students throughout the year, and through watching this film they have a "front row seat" to all of these fundamental processes.

Talk Back Session / Stage Tour

Today students from Dixie Middle were able to go up to Dixie High to watch their fall performance of the musicalSeven Brides for Seven Brothers.

After the performance, DMS students participated in a talk back session held with Mr. Saxton (Drama Director of DHS) and the cast/crew of the show. DMS students were able to ask questions to Mr. Saxton and the cast and get a "behind the scenes" tour of the stage and scene shop.

What a wonderful experience it was for them! They have so much to be excited for as enter high school and become involved in the theatre program that is so strong! I am glad we were able to arrange such an educational experience for them... collaboration between the middle school and high school can never be a bad thing right? Oh yeah... we had yummy donuts too!

*Parents, please make sure your student is at school on these days IN COSTUME! (They know what their costumes are... ask them). The play CANNOT be performed if we are missing actors/actresses etc. Please help me make this wonderful performance opportunity happen! Grades will suffer otherwise... thank you for your support! Thriller Dance!

Dear parents,

This year ALL theatre students are going to do a really fun activity: THE MICHAEL JACKSON "THRILLER" DANCE!! I told the students about this activity at the beginning of the year and they have been super excited to get started on the project ever since. Please have your students in class so that they may be able to learn the choreography to the dance and receive a good grade for participating in this activity. We will have two performances of this thriller dance:

Monday October 26th at 9:40 in the gymnasiumfor our school pep assembly- fill free to come and take pictures and/or film the dance!

Friday October 30th at the Dixie Middle School Halloween dance that takes place during school (no parents however will be allowed to come and view this performance). See you there and Happy Halloween!

Snippet Play Productions

Dear Parents,

Students from Theatre I class have been rehearsing for their upcoming opportunity to perform their "Snippet Play" production of their favorite scenes from movies and plays to the students and faculty of Dixie Middle School. Our goal is have 4 opportunities to perform this production before the quarter break October 15th.Therefore the days that we would invite you and your families to come and watch the play are as follows:

If your student is in Theatre I 2nd Period on A Day:

Monday October 12th at 10:30am and 11:00 am
Wednesday October 14th at 10:15 am and 10:45am

If your student is in Theatre I 4th Period on A Day:

Monday October 12th at 1:40 and 2:15 in the afternoon
Wednesday October 14th at 1:40 and 2:15 in the afternoon


The performances will take place in the Dixie Middle School Auditorium located at 825 S 100 E. Upon entering the school take your first left and walk down the hall until you reach the 2nd Mini Auditorium door on the right, enter and take a seat and the show will begin as scheduled. Feel free to bring a camera and take some pictures of your amazing student as they perform their work to you! All family, friends, neighbors, and siblings are welcome to attend! The play itself will last about 20 minutes.

YOUR STUDENT COSTUME REQUIREMENT AND RESPONSIBILITY:

This Snippet Play production is going to be performed in the "black box" theatre style. That means that all your student has to wear for his/her costume is simply: all black! Black pants, skirt, dress, shirt, shoes or black socks will do if your student does not own a black pair. If your student has a black shirt with text or writing on it, have them turn the shirt inside out so the text, design, or logo is hidden and that will work perfectly!! Keep it simple, and keep it black ha-ha! I appreciate your support in helping them remember to wear or bring their "costume" on the dates posted above. Your students are wonderful! They have been so fun to teach and I genuinely love them dearly:) Can't wait to see and meet you on the days we perform! Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Please also note that it is CRUCIAL that your student is present on these days to perform! If they don't show there is NO ONE in the cast who knows their part and the ability to perform the show will be halted... The play and scenes will simply not work if people are missing, the experience of performing will be lost, fellow cast members will be discouraged and let down, and grades will consequently have to suffer. Please help me make this production happen; your students have worked so hard and the deserve to fill the "fruits" of their labors and have an amazing performance experience. I hope their experience is nothing short of this desire I have for them. See you on performance day!

Talent Show Performance

Students from my Theatre II class decided they wanted to do a "mock cheerleader" and "Hitch" dance for the spring talent show at DMS. I was able to film their silly performance from the light booth. The audience loved them!

Snippet Play - I

May 2009:

A fun class Snippet play was performed at DMS by the Theatre I students featuring scenes from The Notebook, The Goonies, Shrek, Elf, Ever After, The Three Amigo's and much much more! It turned out to be a very fun activity! Click here to see some production photos.

Fairy-Tale Remix Activity

For our Scriptwriting Unit, the Theatre II students were asked to think of their favorite fairy-tale story and "remix" it by writing an alternate ending or twist to its storyline. 


Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Resolution, Plot, Conflict, Action, and Drama were all vocabulary words and ideas discussed throughout the unit that the students had to identify and present in the final theatrical presentation of their "remixed" fairy-tales. The performances proved to solitify in their minds the principles learned in the Scriptwriting Unit. Their final performance on stage also produced a highly entertaining afternoon of laughs and memories for their families and young children invited into the school to view the production. The Mystery Of The Suffocated 7th Grader

Directed by Ani Rogers. Costumes, set design, and construction were completed by the Spring '09 Theatre II students at Dixie Middle School in St. George Utah. Many performances were held in front of a live audience comprised of the students and faculty of DMS, parents, friends, and family members of the performing students.

The purpose of today’s venue is for you to understand what the Dixie Middle School theatre program is all about! What exactly do the theatre students learn in class? How has this study helped them personally in their lives on and off the stage? We hope that we can answer those questions and give you a brief demonstration of the skills learned today in this theatre review performance.

Highlights include a media documentary of the process it took for the students to get the show to performance level, musical scenes from Rent, Grease, Newsies, Fiddler on the Roof, Hairspray, and the performance of solo, small group, and ensemble acting numbers.
